It's the next big thing in social media! Or is it?

We’ve all seen it—the latest and greatest new social media tool that is going to change life as we know it!

Really?

It’s been fascinating seeing all the progressions made on the social media front, especially in the past five years or so. I distinctly remember when I first learned about Facebook back in fall 2004. I was working at KOMU in Columbia, MO and a colleague of mine came up and the conversation went something like this:

Colleague: Have you heard of Facebook?

Me: Have I heard of what?

Colleague: Facebook. It’s the next big thing.

So, what do I do? I get on Facebook. And lo and behold six years later, Facebook is a thriving entity and arguably the most-used social media tool at this point. Fast forward three years to fall 2007. I was working here at Xenophon and attended the DC Technoliday Party with Jim Long, Peter Corbett and others when Rana June Sobhany and I started chatting. Our conversation went something like this:

Rana: Are you on Twitter?

Me: Am I on what?

Rana: Twitter. It’s the next big thing.

Three years later it was the same conversation just about a different social media platform.

So, since I’ve become much older (not old…just older) and wiser in the past two and a half years since I first joined Twitter, it got me thinking, with all of the new emerging social media tools out there, and with the limited amount of time everyone have to learn about and use them, which ones should people really concentrate on learning? That’s where we can help.

Xenophon has begun doing some of the work for our clients. We’re utilizing proprietary Internet research tools to give our clients access to information they haven’t had, but need to know about. I’m going to take some time to play with some of these new platforms and let you know what purpose they serve, and I’ll do so in layman’s terms. We will also examine how these new tools can be helpful to your business and your brand.

In true social media form, this is going to be an interactive project.  What new social media platforms do you want to know about? You tell me. In my next blog, I’ll examine Four Square

Keep your eyes on our blog. I’ll help you be the person at the next event talking about “the next big thing.”

social media here to stay

Hey Amanda,

I think that’s the thing with any new form of social media is not to discount it as some fad. I’m sure there were haters saying facebook and twitter will just be a flash in the pan. However companies are realizing there are benefits to being on these platforms as another way to connect with their clients or customers.

True, it’s hard to keep up because it appears something new comes out every week, but we have open learn about it. As an active user of foursquare, I see how businesses are now incorporating the location based media into promotions such as become the mayor of Starbucks and win a free cup of coffee.

Praise For Xenophon

“The last time we worked together, Xenophon helped produce a strategic plan that ultimately transformed a bankrupt technology company with a stock option probe into a successful $2.1 billion acquisition.”
