Top Stories of the Decade

The end to the Century’s first decade brought with it the traditional rankings of the most significant news stories from 2000 to 2010, and more than a few nods of acknowledgement from those of us at Xenophon.

Based on at least one of the rankings we observed – from the Pew Charitable Trusts – Xenophon was directly involved with clients in at least nine of the top 25 stories of the decade:

  • 9-11: Aviation clients
  • Hurricanes Katrina and Rita: The Salvation Army
  • Sniper shootings in DC: Restaurant client
  • Haiti earthquake: The Salvation Army
  • Tsunami in Indian Ocean: The Salvation Army
  • Transatlantic flight terrorist plot: Aviation clients
  • Gasoline Prices: Air Transport Association
  • Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan: The Salvation Army
  • Hurricane Ike: The Salvation Army

In addition, a Xenophon colleague was at the epicenter of one of the sports world’s biggest stories of the decade – Barry Bonds’ home-run chase and the issues swirling around it.

As we move into the current year, and the decade to come, the lessons learned, or reaffirmed, from the previous 10 years:

  • Technology is vital: Our support of The Salvation Army during those first tenuous days after the Haiti earthquake was practically all via social media. Social media is a measuring tool, a response tool. Technology can help us respond quicker. It’s an important tool, but just one among many.
  • Experience still dominates: As we moved from issue to issue, we could always rely upon our preparation, our readiness and our colleagues to support us no matter if it was a remote Gulf Coast community or the halls of Congress.
  • Care about our clients: Xenophon Strategies began in late 2000, and we still have our first clients. We have grown with them, and their people, and care passionately about their stories – no matter whether they are the biggest of the decade, or most important one today.

Praise For Xenophon

“The last time we worked together, Xenophon helped produce a strategic plan that ultimately transformed a bankrupt technology company with a stock option probe into a successful $2.1 billion acquisition.”
