
Matt Meenan is a Managing Director in Xenophon’s public relations practice and has expertise in media relations and crisis communications. He currently serves as the primary account manager for The Salvation Army in the United States as well as The Salvation Army in Canada & Bermuda. In this role, he oversees account activities, conducts regular media trainings and provides strategic counsel to help drive positive media coverage and manage issues. He has worked with national and local journalists to secure feature-length stories in print, broadcast and online outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, NBC, CNN, FOX News and others.
For The Salvation Army in the United States, Mr. Meenan coordinates national communications surrounding the Annual Red Kettle Christmas Campaign – one of the world’s longest-running and most successful philanthropic events. This includes on-site support for spokespeople at the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day half-time show, which kicks off the charity’s yearly campaign. In past years, the “Red Kettle Kickoff” has featured entertainers including Jonas Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, among others.
Since 2004, Mr. Meenan has provided on-the-ground crisis communications support for The Salvation Army for its disaster response efforts, including tours along the Gulf Coast during and after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 and 2006, as well as on-site support for Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008. More recently, Mr. Meenan assisted national communications efforts surrounding the 2010 Haitian earthquake.
In 2009, Mr. Meenan was instrumental in implementing the Army’s current national online/social media strategy.
During his six years at Xenophon Strategies, Mr. Meenan has worked with a number of clients in both the public and private sectors, including: the Church Alliance, Blank Rome, LLP and LLC; the General Services Administration, Virgin America and others.
Mr. Meenan graduated from Vanderbilt University, where he was a staff writer on the student newspaper, The Vanderbilt Hustler. In 2000, Mr. Meenan interned for Congresswoman Connie Morella (R-Md.).
